Synthesis at the Interface of Chemistry and Biology: From Stem Cells to the Genetic Code Featuring Dr. Peter Schultz, pioneer of synthetic biology

Presented by:
Dr. Peter Schultz
Director of Calibr; Professor, Chemistry, The Scripps Research Institute

Program Overview:
As a pioneer of synthetic biology, Dr. Peter Schultz fuses the interface of biology, chemistry, and materials science.  Learn about his synergistic approach and insights into the complex biological and chemical systems including the chemical and physical properties of genetic codes to the identification of small molecules that control stem cell self-renewal and directed differentiation, and the reprogramming of somatic cells.  This fascinating work has led to the founding of numerous start-up companies and the California Institute for Biotechnology Research (Calibr).  Calibr, which introduces a new model of academic to industry collaboration, was partnered by Merck with academic scientists and biotechnology entrepreneurs, and is led by Dr. Shultz.

Who Should Attend:
Scientists, engineers, physicians, healthcare leaders, venture capitalists, technology and life sciences professionals, services providers and business leaders.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Peter G. Schultz is currently the Scripps Professor of Chemistry and Director of Calibr. His contributions to science include the discovery of catalytic antibodies, and their use to study fundamental mechanisms of biological catalysis and the evolution of binding and catalytic function; the development and application of methods to add new building blocks (beyond the common twenty amino acids) to the genetic codes of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms; and the development and application of molecular diversity technologies to problems in chemistry, biology and medicine, including the generation of combinatorial materials libraries and the use of chemical, genomic and protein libraries to identify and characterize molecules and genes related to regenerative medicine and orphan and neglected diseases.

In addition to being awarded numerous prestigious awards and publishing hundreds of scientific periodicals; Schultz also established the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation in 1999 in La Jolla (and served as its Director until 2010).

Schultz has an illustrious academic career that includes Caltech, MIT, University of California, Berkeley and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
