I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity to learn more about Experiential Learning efforts at UC San Diego, and their impact on students and the community. Please see the attached flyer below, on the January 26 conference Education in Action: Mobilizing the next generation for social reform, sponsored by Sixth College.
UCSD was ranked first in the nation for commitment to service by Washington Monthly in 2010 (http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/newsrel/awards/08-23MonthlyRanks.asp), and we have also been named to the President’s Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction in 2011 – one of fifteen other higher education institutions in California (http://www.lajollalight.com/2011/05/18/obama-singles-out-ucsd-cal-western-for-community-service-efforts/). Reports from the AACU, Pew Research Center, and research from Sixth College Practicum program at UCSD confirm the value of experiential learning in higher education and the community. Through experiential pedagogies, students develop leadership skills, social responsibility, commitment to public/human service, and greater civic engagement.
Staff, faculty, students and community members are invited to participate in the dialogue about the value and transformative elements of experiential learning pedagogies during this conference featuring over 70 panelists and presenters. Register and learn more about the conference here: http://sixth.ucsd.edu/experiential-learning-conference/index.html.
