A hearing of the California Senate Select Committee on Emerging Technology
Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett, Chair
Friday, October 4, 2013 – 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
School of International Relations, UCSD
The hearing will focus on how the State of California can step up to meet the challenges and opportunities of the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (“BRAIN”) Initiative.
In April 2013, the Obama Administration unveiled the BRAIN Initiative-a collaborative project that will map the activity of every neuron in the human brain. This research effort will revolutionize our understanding of how brain function is linked to human behavior and learning, and uncover new ways to treat, prevent and cure brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.
Research universities, foundations, philanthropies and major companies are supporting this focused endeavor which will accelerate the development and application of new technologies to create jobs and industries of the future while improving lives.
The Select Committee’s hearing will explore the state’s role in promoting the research, development and deployment of nano- and neuro- technologies leading to the BRAIN Initiative.
